A Letter From Richard O. Wightman, Jr., Acting Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs

Fiscal Year 2012 was a year of moving forward for the DoD STARBASE Program. Military commands in collaboration with local school districts and communities located in Nevada, Michigan, Louisiana, Virginia, Montana, Washington, Wisconsin, Utah, Georgia, Indiana, and Texas celebrated the opening and operations of their DoD STARBASE Programs. In addition, 24 of the 76 DoD STARBASE Programs implemented a structured afterschool science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) mentoring program for middle school students. This valued and relevant DoD outreach program is helping to build and enlarge a diverse pool of potential innovative workers needed to support the DoD workforce consisting of civilian and military personnel.

In FY 2012, the DoD STARBASE Program operated at 76 locations in 40 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Military commanders partnered with 1,154 schools from 365 school districts to serve over 68,000 students. Approximately 750,000 students have participated in the program since its inception.

The 2012 DoD STARBASE Report provides examples of what former DoD STARBASE students have accomplished and what they are doing today. It highlights the linkages that exist between military commands, public school districts, and non-governmental organizations and discusses the approaches taken by program directors to strengthen the community relationships in order to provide a worthwhile STEM education experience for the participating students. The report describes the program elements and provides an update on the installation of the enhanced standardized program curriculum at all the program locations. It emphasizes how the program continues to expose students to positive role models within the military services and the support the program receives from senior military leadership which is critical to the student’s success. Comments within this report from Major General Donald Dunbar, the Adjutant General of the Wisconsin National Guard, Mr. Scott Martens, Chairman, STARBASE Savannah Foundation, and Mr. James Heppelmann, President and CEO of PTC provide a military, industry and community perspective of the DoD STARBASE Program.

The DoD STARBASE Program Report is an investment in the future of our youth and nation.
