U.S. Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR) Visits STARBASE Kingsley
U.S. Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR) Walden dropped in on the STARBASE Kingsley classroom which has provided a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) program for fifth-graders related to base personnel since the program began in 1993.
“It wasn’t in the Presidential budget on the first look,” Col. Smith said.
Oregon Military Department sent a letter to the Congressional Delegation, including Rep. Walden, seeking support for the program.
Col. Smith said it was important to show Walden during his visit what Starbase looks like on the ground.
“I think it was important he got to see it,” Smith said.
Walden peered inside a 3D printer before asking nearby 12-year-old Ty Earnest about the gear shifts Earnest made out of Legos.
The U.S. House of Representatives recently approved approximately $30 million for the nationwide program, which collectively funds 61 Starbase STEM programs.
“You’re voting on something in Washington, it’s nice to see it play out locally,” Walden said.
Alesha Earnest, a Starbase teacher on base, shook Walden’s hand in appreciation for visiting the program classroom.
“You’re doing the heavy lifting,” Walden told Earnest.
