Featured Director

Polly Unterbrunner is the Director of STARBASE Rapid City/NOVA Honor located in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota.  She graduated from Black Hills State University with honors in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science in Education and received her Master of Arts in Education in Curriculum and Instruction in 2003.

Polly started out as an instructor with the program in 2006 and fell in love with the energy of the curriculum and the vision of the program.  Watching students attending STARBASE realize their potential in not only the STEM areas but also within themselves as they pushed beyond their comfort level in many ways was the driving force behind her passion for this program.

Becoming Deputy Director and then Director allowed Polly greater opportunities to reach out into the community to seek areas of growth and expansion.  She is blessed with a rock solid team that works incredibly hard to deliver the outstanding program to as many students as they can possibly see during the school year.  She works closely with the Rapid City Area Schools District and Douglas School District in an effort to align the STARBASE curriculum with the district vision and student needs.  The NOVA Honor Team travels to Native American Indian Reservations and rural schools throughout the western part of the state to deliver the program to as many students as possible in these rural locations. In 2017 STARBASE Rapid City ran two STARBASE 2.0 clubs in two middle schools and is looking forward to maintaining the relationships with these schools and with the business partnerships within the community. The ability to make a positive impact on the lives of all of the children who attend STARBASE and STARBASE 2.0 is incredible and exciting.

Polly and her husband have four children of their own, ranging in ages from 5-13 years old.  Watching her children grow into themselves, in their educational journey helps keep her laser focused on what this program can do to change the trajectory of a child’s path when given the opportunity to try new things, overcome challenges, and see themselves in a successful light.
