BOISE — The Idaho Military Division’s STARBASE program hosted a grand opening of its facilities on Gowen Field.
The goal of the program is to teach 1,500 local fifth-grade students each year, who are underserved in STEM, through hands-on instruction and educational activities.
Over the course of five weeks, kids will receive 25 hours of instruction.
“When they’re out here they are primarily going to be doing simulations and experiments that teach them things like, why do planes fly? They are going to learn about the Bernoulli’s Principle, they’re going to learn all three laws of Newton and how they’re going to apply that to their everyday life,” said James Heuring, Director of STARBASE Idaho.
The event concluded with a ribbon-cutting and tour of the facilities.
The goal of the program is to foster academic success in science, technology, engineering, and math while bringing awareness of the high-tech jobs of the 21st century workplace.
