Featured Director - Nancy Binkerhoff-Force

Few people can say that they knew what they wanted to do as a career as young as 11 years of age, but Nancy Brinkerhoff- Force is one such person.  Having teachers who cared so deeply for their students and who made the learning process so exciting, Nancy said they inspired her to become an educator.  After graduating from Tioga High School, she went immediately to Louisiana College to pursue her Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education. While attending college and observing in many different educational settings, Mrs. Brinkerhoff-Force realized that she was being specifically drawn to older students classified as exceptional or struggling learners. Adding Elementary and Secondary Special Education to her degree and graduating from college in 1991, Nancy spent the next 9 ½ years teaching secondary, special needs students in Louisiana for the Rapides Parish School System.

Wanting to make a slight career change in January of 2000 without leaving the educational field, Mrs. Brinkerhoff-Force accepted a position with the Louisiana Military Department (LMD) as a classroom instructor for the Louisiana Youth Challenge Program at Camp Beauregard (YCP-CB), where she spent the next 13 years of her professional career. While serving as the Lead Instructor for the Instructional Department of YCP-CB (June 2001 – December 2012), Mrs. Brinkerhoff-Force completed her Masters of Education in Educational Leadership from Northwestern State University (Natchitoches, LA, 2005).

Nancy considers the move to the Louisiana Military Department and becoming a part of LMD’s Educational Programs one of her best professional decisions - “I cannot imagine life taking me down any other career paths; the last 17 years have been more rewarding than I could have ever imagined.” Her most recent time in the Educational Programs of LMD has been to serve as Director of the Pelican State STARBASE – Camp Beauregard. In late 2012 Mrs. Brinkerhoff-Force saw an opportunity to expand her areas of expertise to include exciting young people to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics (S.T.E.M.).

“I am honored to be the Director of a DoD STARBASE Program, Pelican State STARBASE – Camp Beauregard, that has successfully served the students in Avoyelles, Grant, and Rapides Parishes for over 10 years – and ultimately a part of a national program that does so much to change the educational landscape of the future,” Nancy explains.

Not shying away from her personal accomplishments, Mrs. Brinkerhoff-Force also shares that she has been married to her husband, Thomas, for nearly 29 years, and she is the proud mother of two children: Megan (23) and Matthew (19). And when she begins to share the experience of having her first grandbaby (Owen, 2 mos. old), she beams. It is very evident that her family and her career bring her great joy.
